Dr. Alexander Kaire, member of the Liepāja City Council, city physician, naturalist and pharmacist, was born in 1873 in Rucava. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the Moscow University where he got the diploma of pharmaceutist in 1907 and the degree of doctor of medicine in 1908. After his studies he returned in Latvia, where he was the chief physician and director of the Liepaja Hospital from 1920 to 1933.   

Dr. A. Kaire was repeatedly asked to move to Riga, to accept an offer to take the place of the University lecturer, but he remained faithful to Liepāja. 

In 1937 the Library of the University received the donated private library of Dr. A. Kaire, which totaled eight thousand various books, consisting of editions published at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. 

Being a physician, Dr. A. Kaire was interested not only in medicine, but also in philosophy, history, theology and natural sciences, and so he had collected one of the largest private libraries in Latvia and in it he gathered a lot of books on medicine, forensic medicine, pharmacy, surgery, human pathology, internal medicine and various contagious diseases. The editions are in German and Russian. 

This donation also includes publications on science in general, including historiography, history and culture.  For example, there are books about the history of culture of Egypt, India, Rome and Greece. 

The donation is enriched by rare books on the history of  of Baltic including one of the oldest editions of the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia (Origines Livoniae sacrae et civilis) in two volumes (1747-1753). This edition is a primary source on the history of Latvia and Estonia, and the oldest known Livonian chronicle written in  the territory of Latvia (time frame 1180-1227).  

As the identification sign of the donor there is a stamp of Dr. A. Kaire in these books.
