Embrik Strand (1876-1947) was born in Ål, Norway. He studied at the University of Oslo and also worked in its Museum of Zoology. Later he got a foreign scholarship to broaden his professional knowledge in Germany. He worked at the Royal Museum of Zoology in Berlin, 1907-1922, and from 1912 at the Museum of Entomology in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1922 Embrik Strand was offered a post as a professor of zoology at the University of Latvia. From 1923 up to the end of his life, 1947, he held this post at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

During his lifetime Embrik Strand collected a vast and comprehensive library on natural sciences, principally zoology. His library is a unique collection on zoology and entomology in various European languages, notably German, English and French. Prof. Strand devoted a lot of time and resources to science, research, obtaining books, and to correspondence with zoologists from other countries; consequently he obtained a lot of valuable editions for his library.

There remain around 7000 items of this collection and information about it is available in the, alphabetically arranged, scanned card catalogue in the portal of UL. You can browse the Strand collection there, as well as order the items electronically.
