On September 13, 2001, the department of Austrian and Swiss literature was opened in the Academic Library of Latvia, with the participation of delegations from the intelligentsia and political circles of both countries. It was created on the initiative of the Austrian Embassy in Latvia and the Baltic branch of the Swiss Gebert Riff Foundation (Swiss Baltic Net) so that interested parties have access to information about each of these countries - literature, history, science, culture and to activate mutual cultural cooperation.
