The University of Latvia Library (ULL) stands out as the biggest among the libraries of Latvian higher education institutions serving more than 15,000 students as well as the University of Latvia academic staff and scholars from the University’s 18 research institutes.

ULL is also one of the national-status libraries recognised by the government. In 2024 it served 2.7 million visitors, had 35,500 registered readers and made more than 657,600 book loans.

After the completed merger of ULL and the former Latvian Academic Library (including the legendary Bibliotheca Rigensis, est. 1524, the Misiņš Library, est. 1885, and the rare books and manuscripts heritage), ULL is now home to 3.2 million physical units.

The librarians and experts of ULL offer consultations concerning scientific journals, academic publishing, citation indices, bibliographies and open access methodologies. Through 66 subscribed e-publication channels, there is digital access to approximately 264,000 e-books and e-journals in specialised scientific and general topics, research tools and databases. The Library contributes to the scholarly e-resource repository of the University of Latvia.

The ULL hosts an annual conference in library science and maintains records of its staff members’ publications and participation in international projects.

As of 2025, the Library has eight locations in Riga, including the University’s main building at Raiņa Boulevard, the state-of-the-art University of Latvia campus (“Academic Centre”) focusing on natural science and technology as well as at several other departmental buildings for the benefit of those pursuing humanities, economics, social and education science and psychology.

ULL is one of the eleven partners of the national unified catalogue, accessible for everyone seeking knowledge, innovation and a historico-cultural experience through modern and convenient library services.
